Upside Down Eatery: A Centurion Cafe Worth Knowing About

If you are looking for a cafe in Centurion where the food goes well beyond the usual coffee-shop offering, Upside Down Eatery deserves a spot on your list. Located in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion, this relaxed eatery combines seriously good cafe food, quality coffee and a stylish atmosphere with one particularly unusual feature: an impressive long table that can accommodate up to 70 people for functions and celebrations.

What surprised us most when we visited was the quality and attention to detail in the food. It may have the relaxed feel of a neighbourhood cafe, but what arrives on the plate feels a step above what you might expect from an everyday coffee shop.

Breakfast and brunch in Centurion

One of our favourites is the hash brown avo stack. The Brioche Benedict is another option worth looking out for, while the Berry French Toast offers something different if you prefer a sweeter breakfast. There is also a savoury muffin that we think is well worth trying. The menu changes seasonally, although some favourites remain.

What we’d order for lunch

The honey-lime chicken is one of the dishes we would order again and is also a favourite of the manager. Another standout is the toasted chicken mayo. It sounds deceptively simple, but this isn’t your standard coffee-shop chicken mayo sandwich. There is a twist to it that makes it one of the more unexpected dishes we tried.

Upside Down Eatery also offers surprisingly good value. A realistic spend is around R200 per person, depending on what you order, with options such as a sandwich and coffee at approximately R120. Menus and prices can change, so check the latest menu when visiting.

Coffee, cake and something unexpected

Coffee is a big part of the Upside Down experience and one of the things regular customers keep returning for. There are cakes and pastries too, including one of the more unusual cakes we’ve discovered on our Centurion food travels: chocolate beer cake. Yes, there is actually beer in the cake. You’ll also find indulgent drinks such as the Biscoff Freezo.

Another useful thing to know is that Upside Down Eatery sells artisan sourdough bread to take home. The bread isn’t baked by the eatery itself, but it is available to buy there.

A Centurion cafe where you’ll want to stay

Some cafes are designed for a quick coffee. Upside Down Eatery is the kind of place where you may find yourself staying considerably longer. The interiors have a classy, polished feel while still maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. It works well for catching up with a friend, brunch as a couple, lunch, business meetings, groups and remote workers. Free secure parking is available.

A unique function venue in Centurion

One of the most interesting features is the exceptionally long table. It can accommodate up to 70 people, creating an unusual setting for group celebrations and private events. Before you go

There is one important accessibility consideration. Upside Down Eatery is situated on the first floor and is accessed via a flight of stairs. There is no wheelchair-friendly access, so it may not be suitable for people with limited mobility. It is also not particularly recommended for small children or pets.

The eatery is at the corner of Tshiomate Close and Lenchen Avenue in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion. Opening hours supplied to Discover Pretoria East are Monday to Friday 07:00 to 16:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 15:00. Sunday is closed.

The DPE verdict

Upside Down Eatery stands out because it doesn’t feel like a generic coffee shop. The food was the biggest surprise of our visit. There is noticeable attention to detail in the dishes, the atmosphere encourages you to stay rather than rush off, and there are enough unusual menu discoveries to make a first visit interesting.

Come for breakfast, brunch or lunch, meet a friend for coffee, pick up some artisan sourdough, or keep that 70-seater table in mind the next time you’re planning a celebration.
