About Fortis Collective, Lynnwood Pine Forest Events

Fortis Collective is a self funded community initiative focused on restoring and caring for Lynnwood Pine Forest in Pretoria East. What makes Fortis Collective remarkable is not only the visible transformation of the space, but also the values behind the work. The founders showed up when the forest was being overlooked, when it felt safer to pass by than to walk through. Instead of waiting for a big budget or a formal programme, Fortis Collective began with time, energy, personal funds, and a clear belief that public spaces should feel welcoming.

Over time, Fortis Collective has helped shift the atmosphere of the forest from neglected to inviting. Pathways are cleared. Litter is removed. Grass is cut. Broken areas are repaired where possible. This steady, hands on care has helped people feel comfortable returning to the forest, and that return has sparked something powerful: a growing community that gathers regularly, meets neighbours, and enjoys nature together.

A public space made welcoming again

Not long ago, Lynnwood Pine Forest was quiet in a way that signalled neglect. Fortis Collective recognised the potential of the space and took practical steps to restore it. This is not a once off clean up. It is consistent upkeep that builds trust in the area and pride in the neighbourhood.

Fortis Collective is also intentional about access. Every event and activity is designed to be free, so that cost is never a barrier for families, students, pensioners, or anyone who needs a safe outdoor space to breathe, move, and connect. That commitment to free entry is a core part of the Fortis Collective identity, and it is one of the reasons the initiative has become such a meaningful local story in Pretoria East.

Free events that bring neighbours together

Fortis Collective is known for creating weekly opportunities for people to gather in the forest. These events are more than entertainment. They are community building in action. When people share a space regularly, strangers become familiar faces. Parents chat while children explore. People who feel isolated find a reason to show up and belong.

By keeping events free, Fortis Collective helps ensure the forest stays a shared community asset rather than a gated experience. The result is a welcoming environment that supports connection across different ages and backgrounds in Pretoria East.

Why Fortis Collective matters for local wellbeing

The impact of Fortis Collective reaches beyond the visible improvement of the forest. Safer, cared for public spaces support healthier communities. When a park feels clean and active, people are more likely to walk, spend time outdoors, and look out for one another. Fortis Collective also supports the natural environment by reducing litter, encouraging respectful use of the space, and promoting a culture of care.

There is also an important economic ripple effect. Community events create a platform where local makers and small businesses can connect with residents in an authentic way. Fortis Collective helps grow a network of people who support local, share recommendations, and build relationships rooted in place.

How to support Fortis Collective

Fortis Collective is funded through public donations and supported by volunteers. As the initiative grows, so do the practical costs of maintaining the space and hosting free events. If you have ever attended an event, enjoyed a walk through the forest, or simply believe that Pretoria East deserves safe and welcoming public spaces, your support makes a direct difference.

Support can look like a donation, volunteering time, helping with clean ups, or sharing the initiative with friends and neighbours. Fortis Collective is proof that consistent community action changes places, and that small contributions add up to something lasting.

Plan a visit and get involved

Lynnwood Pine Forest is a special part of Pretoria East, and Fortis Collective has helped make it a place worth visiting again. If you want to get involved, start by attending an event, joining a clean up, or following updates on Instagram by searching for the handle ourfortiscollective. Even a simple visit, a friendly greeting to other walkers, and respectful use of the space helps reinforce the culture of care that Fortis Collective is building.

Fortis Collective welcomes community members who want to be part of something practical and hopeful. The vision is bigger than one forest. With enough support, Fortis Collective could help inspire the restoration of other underused spaces in Pretoria East and beyond.

Either quiet or happy sounds. Such a soul place to be!

When I was young (not so much anymore…) playing in a safe nature environment close to our house, was the best fun I had with friends!

Don’t you miss this for your kids and grandkids?

    This is it! Stop by!

Invest for it to stay like this.

Volunteer to help and grow it so we can leave this behind for the next generation.

    Support taking safe spaces back.

My new favourite spot for self-care!!!

I felt so welcome when there were people/activities!

A caring experience in a safe space. I love the community feeling. So quiet, clean and peaceful. The founders really did something AMAZING here. They brought healthy wellbeing back to a part of Pretoria.

I’m a “workaholic”, but a health scare forced me to have a better work/life balance. Since I love nature and nature spaces around Pretoria is not always safe, I am so happy to have found my safe space.

Activities are free yes, but worth supporting financially with donations to keep this wonderful initiative, connection with your kind of people – depending on the activity that speaks to you – ALIVE!

I feel my soul rest in this forest. For the first time in a looong time!

Bring your kids, grandkids, friends, anybody you want to experience peace and caring in nature again, along!

Thank you Annie and Nick for giving us our connection with the earth (nature) back – one space at a time!!!

Anybody do geo-caching? Maybe not a bad idea to create a FTF!!!!

Watching this space come to life through the efforts of the collective has been heartwarming. Seeing how the community has rallied behind an initiative that started so simple is absolutely unbelievable. Knowing this space is now usable, safe and part of the community means we have fulfilled our goal.
